Passport and visa photo requirements in Qatar: sizes, background, and where to get them

Passport and visa photos get rejected more often than people expect, usually for a reason that has nothing to do with how the photo looks and everything to do with a spec being off by a few millimetres. Here's what Qatar's requirements actually are, and what causes a rejection at the counter.

Qatar passport photo specification

• Size: 4cm x 6cm (40mm x 60mm).
• Background: plain white, no shadows, no texture.
• Head position: facing forward, centred, neutral expression, mouth closed.
• Head size: face and top of head should fill roughly 70–80% of the frame height.
• Glasses: removed, unless worn permanently for medical reasons — and even then, no glare on the lenses and no tinted lenses.
• Headwear: not permitted, except for religious reasons, and even then the full face from chin to forehead must remain visible.
• Recency: taken within the last six months, and it should look like you look now — a photo from two years and one haircut ago is a common cause of secondary checks at immigration.

These match the format used across most GCC passport applications, but Qatar's exact size (4x6cm) differs from some other countries' 2x2 inch standard, which is the single most common mix-up we see — travellers arriving with photos printed for a different country's passport renewal.

Visa and residence permit (QID) photos

Visa and Qatar ID (QID) photos generally follow the same 4x6cm, white-background format as the passport photo, though specific visa categories occasionally call for a different size — always confirm against the current requirement listed for the specific application you're submitting, since these are set by the issuing authority and can change without much notice.

What actually gets a photo rejected

In order of how often we see it happen:

1. Shadow on the background. Even a faint shadow behind the head from a phone camera and a wall reads as "non-uniform background" and gets flagged.
2. Wrong size for the application. A 2x2 inch US-style photo submitted for a Qatar passport renewal, or vice versa.
3. Expression or head tilt. A slight smile, a tilted head, or eyes not fully open are minor to the human eye and a fail against the automated and manual checks used by processing centres.
4. Glare on glasses. If glasses are being kept in for medical reasons, glare across the lens from an on-camera flash is an easy miss without a proper studio light setup.
5. Compression artefacts on a phone-taken photo. A photo taken on a phone and printed at a convenience kiosk often has visible compression around the edges of the face — not usually disqualifying on its own, but combined with an off background it's often enough to trigger a second visit.
